Children of the Resistance
France, 1940. Under German occupation, schoolchildren François, Eusèbe and Lisa refuse to stand by in silence. While most adults comply with the occupiers, these 13-year-old friends embark on a secret adventure: forming an undercover cell to resist the Nazis, with courage as their only weapon to fight against injustice. Through bold acts of defiance and clever sabotage, they begin to awaken a spirit of rebellion in their community and inspire their own parents to join the resistance.
Christophe Barratier is a director, screenwriter, producer and composer. In 1991, he contributed to the production of major films such as MICROCOSMOS, HIMALAYA and WINGED MIGRATION before devoting himself fully to directing and screenwriting.
He gained international recognition with THE CHORUS (in competition at the GFF 2004), a worldwide success seen by more than 20 million spectators and nominated for both the César Awards and the Academy Awards. He later directed films combining artistic ambition and popular success, including PARIS 36, WAR OF THE BUTTONS (in competition at GFF 2011), THE OUTSIDER, FLY AWAY WITH ME, THE TIME OF SECRETS, COMME PAR MAGIE and CHILDREN OF THE RESISTANCE.
Alongside cinema, Barratier has developed important work in theatre and musical productions, including the stage adaptation of The Chorus and several large-scale musical productions such as Once Upon a Time… Joe Dassin and Jesus of Nazareth in Jerusalem.
Director’s Note
[…] the adventures of these three children through the four years of occupation struck me as a fantastic epic. It could be entertaining and exhilarating, without ever sugarcoating the darker aspects. It proves that even the most dramatic events can be treated in a way that captivates a young audience. […] We follow them from childhood to the threshold of adulthood, which creates multiple layers to the story. Everything about it appealed to me: main characters played by children, and a context that not only fascinates me but has haunted me for a long time. […] My grandmother, a theater actress who lived through those years, was undoubtedly the origin of my fascination. Her husband walked out on her in 1941, leaving her with three children to raise, including my uncle Jacques Perrin and my mother, Eva Simonet, an actress and later a press officer. To support her family, she gave poetry recitals in cabarets in the German-occupied capital. She and her children spoke to me about that time and all its darkness, often sharing poignant anecdotes, and sometimes funny ones too. Living through tragedy does not preclude enjoying moments of happiness. That spirit was there in the comic books […].
