Everyone’s Sorry Nowadays
Bianca, a spirited girl of just thirteen, is searching for solid ground in a place where she feels unseen – by her mother, all of whose love flows to her little brother and his heart condition, and her father and his new girlfriend Cruz, who find her out of control. Everything shifts when her favorite, famed actress, Billie King, suddenly appears in their living room. Over the course of a scorching summer day filled with overwhelming emotions, Bianca’s vivid imagination and jumble of thoughts rise to the surface. She realises that not everything is what she thought, and tries to find her way back to her mother.
Frederike Migom is an acclaimed writer and director. She made her feature debut with BINTI (2019), which screened at Sundance and won 14 awards, including the ECFA Award. Her short films include MALAKIM (2013, Best Short at Shanghai), ADAM & EVERYTHING (2014), NKOSI COIFFURE (2015, selected at Tribeca and BFI), NORA & SAM (2021, CannesSeries), and the documentaries SI-G (2017), VALIES VOL DROMEN (2017), and BOOS (ANGRY) (2021). For television, she directed episodes of ALTER EGO (2023) and the upcoming documentary series MAY I BE (ME). Her most recent film, EVERYONE’S SORRY NOWADAYS, is an adaptation of Bart Moeyaert’s novel.
Director’s Note
To me, Bianca is not a difficult child, but a teenager trying to deal with the chaos of her family. A teenager who does not feel seen and seeks recognition for feelings that are entirely normal: anger, desire, confusion. The inner world of a young person is so intense, so honest, so overwhelming. My greatest wish was to honor that and take it seriously — though not too seriously. It may also help that I don’t have children myself. I am the age of the mother, but I am Bianca.
I don’t think I can exist separately from the world I live in. I want my films to be more than just the story of a character; I want them to raise social questions or touch upon realities that make me — and many others — angry. My characters exist in a world and in a specific time. The impact of the state of the world on young people today cannot be denied. They see everything that happens around them and must decide, amid that chaos, what kind of person they will become. So does Bianca. In this case, I wanted to place the ‘smallness’ of one day in Bianca’s life next to the ‘vastness’ of the world. She is a crumb, but her perhaps seemingly banal feelings are big, real and valid. Bianca’s world is falling apart, while the world around her appears to be doing the same.
