Films in competition on July 25, 2024

Another packed day of competing films for the jurors of #Giffoni54, hosted in the theatres located between the Cittadella del Cinema and the Multimedia Valley. Generators +16 in the Sala Truffaut with SILENT ROAR (UK, 2023) directed by Johnny Barrington will be the first invited to view the titles in for the day at 10am. Set on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland, is a young surfer named Dondo. Despite his love for the water, the boy refuses to believe that his fisherman father, who has been lost at sea for a year, is now dead. While Dondo represents tranquillity, Sas, his classmate, is known to be intelligent but at the same time, mischievous with people. The friendship between the two boys will lead them to discover unprecedented ways and do things that will be life-shaping.

Next, also in the Sala Truffaut at 2.30 p.m., Juror Generator +13 will watch the film WHEN WE LOST TO THE GERMANS (Netherlands, 2023) directed by Guido van Driel. The year is 1974 when Holland is defeated in the World Cup final against West Germany and two boys, 12-year-old Jonas and 13-year-old Daan, find themselves wandering the streets of Amsterdam. Coming from two different social backgrounds, they end up sharing the same goal, for different reasons: to talk to Karsten, Jonas’s best friend, who has returned from his holiday earlier than expected after being called in by the police following the disappearance of a girl, Catootje.

Among the morning’s events, for Elements +10 jurors at 10am and again at 5pm, will be the film THE BOOK OF EVERYTHING (Netherlands, 2023) directed by director Ineke Houtman. Thomas lives in a family ruled by a religious and authoritarian father, so much so that at the slightest mistake by his wife or children, he does not miss an opportunity to punish them. The young man, however, has a different view and approach to religion, and finds himself conversing with Jesus and trying to appease his father by using the 10 plagues of Egypt. Unfortunately for him, this idea will lead him to escalate the situation and to seek help from a ‘witch’ who will guide him to music and literature.

In the Sala Lumière at 10am and 4pm, Elements +6 children will have the chance to watch the animated film TOTTO-CHAN: THE LITTLE GIRL AT THE WINDOW (Japan, 2023) directed by Shinnosuke Yakuwa. Shortly before the outbreak of World War II, in Tokyo there is a school where fun, freedom and love coexist in harmony. The founder and headmaster of the school believes that freedom of expression is fundamental for everyone, including little Totto-Chan. The vivacious child who does not fit in at any school finds her own dimension within the classrooms of this unique school.

The Festival’s oldest jurors, Generator +18 are scheduled to be in the Sala Galileo at 10am for the film WEREWOLF (Spain, 2023) directed by Pau Calpe. Seventeen-year-old Adria lives with his older brother Ramon and his brother’s girlfriend Tona. The mute boy, suffering from long speeches and closed spaces, is always received in the worst possible way by those who have to deal with him. What many people don’t know, however, is that he hides a secret: during moonlit nights something unpredictable happens, forcing the three of them to have to flee in a van.

To conclude, once again in the Sala Galileo at 4 p.m. for the Gex Doc section, the audience will have a chance to see NIGHT GONE BY (Switzerland and Spain, 2023) by director Alberto Martin Menacho. Four teenagers live in a small village in the south of Spain, where today’s modernity coexists with the traditions of the past. It is a tale centred on the relationship between animal and man.

For the Parental Experience in the Sala Verde at 10.00 a.m. a Special Event of the Andrea Bocelli Foundation entitled LINEA 7 (Italy, 2024) directed by Guglielmo Magagna and carried out by the boys of ABF GlobalLab is planned. At the end of the screening there will be a meeting with the director; the young people involved in the project and as special guest, Andrea Paris.

Entry is free until full capacity is reached, priority will be given to parents of the ELEMENTS +6 and +10 section.
