Giffoni Valle Piana, 6 July 2026 – Some things seem impossible to reach. Dreams that feel too big, fears that hold us back, questions left unanswered. Yet it is precisely where limits appear insurmountable that the desire to go beyond them is born.
Impossible Things is the theme chosen for the 56th Giffoni Film Festival, taking place from 17 to 25 July. For nine days, more than 5,000 jurors from 35 countries and 500 Italian cities, towns and villages will gather in Giffoni to share stories, emotions and visions, transforming the impossible into a place to be explored.
“This is an exceptionally rich edition”, says Artistic Director Luca Apolito. “This Festival is meant to be experienced as one experiences an era to be read in the voices and faces of the thousands of young people who will come to Giffoni from every corner of the world to tell their stories and recognise themselves in one another. Once again, a community will take shape: one that listens, changes its mind, imagines, and builds the future together. Under the wings of a different Icarus—one whose destiny is not to fall but to succeed—the programme we present brings together the darkness of the cinema and the light of celebration, films and conversation, listening and encounter, all revolving around Impossible Things, a theme that encourages us to look fearlessly at what seems beyond our reach and discover how much possibility lies within it”.
The programme was unveiled at the Sala Blue of the Multimedia Valley, where the Festival team presented the different sections of this year’s edition alongside General Director Jacopo Gubitosi. “The 2026 edition was born out of listening”, says Jacopo Gubitosi. “It was the young people—their questions, concerns and dreams—who showed us the way. Speaking about impossible things means believing that what seems unattainable today can become the driving force behind change, the momentum that pushes the present towards a better future. We have created a programme that weaves together cinema, music, innovation, culture, entertainment and outstanding national and international guests. It is a mosaic of talent, ideas, reflections, emotions and opportunities for dialogue that captures both the complexity and the extraordinary energy of the new generations. Giffoni is all of this: a place where creativity and critical thinking, ambition and vulnerability, dreams and responsibility coexist. Once again, the Festival becomes the world of young people—told by them and built together with them. That is its greatest strength and what continues to make it an international point of reference for everyone who believes in culture as a powerful tool for growth and for shaping the future”. Also attending the presentation were Pietro Rinaldi, President of Giffoni Experience, and Antonio Giuliano, Mayor of Giffoni Valle Piana.
“Every edition of Giffoni marks a new beginning”, said Pietro Rinaldi. “The fifty-sixth edition is even more significant because it chooses to explore what today appears impossible, transforming one of the greatest questions raised by younger generations into an opportunity for collective reflection. Impossible Things is not simply this year’s theme—it is an invitation not to accept limits as destiny, but to see them as the starting point from which to imagine the future. Giffoni continues to be a place where culture, creativity and dialogue come together, placing young people, their perspectives and their extraordinary ability to point the way forward at its heart. This is the mission that guides us and makes Giffoni a cultural landmark recognised around the world. Once again, we are proud to present an outstanding programme, the result of our team’s dedication and commitment to responding to the needs, aspirations, dreams and expectations of our jurors”.
“Giffoni is proud to welcome, once again, thousands of young people from every part of the world”, added Antonio Giuliano, Mayor of Giffoni Valle Piana. “Each edition of the Festival represents an extraordinary moment of cultural, human and civic value for our community, while also reaffirming the international vocation of a place that, through dialogue, encounter and participation, has built over the years an identity recognised far beyond Italy’s borders. It is an honour to represent a community that, for more than fifty years, has opened its doors with enthusiasm and a deep sense of belonging, making hospitality one of its defining values. Giffoni does not simply host a Festival—it lives it, shares it and considers it an integral part of its history and future. The 2026 edition, with its theme “Impossible Things”, reminds us how important it is to continue believing in the power of ideas, in the creativity of younger generations and in culture’s ability to build bridges between peoples, experiences and different perspectives. This is the most powerful message Giffoni continues to share with the world, and one that fills me with immense pride as Mayor of this community”.
FILMS IN COMPETITION
A total of 104 films will compete in the 2026 edition of the Festival: 42 feature films and 62 short films from around the world, selected from thousands of international submissions. Together, they offer a powerful cinematic portrait of the present and future of younger generations through the universal language of film. Coming of age, the search for personal identity, parent-child relationships, the need for belonging, historical memory, inclusion, mental health, environmental sustainability and the fight against social inequality are among the key themes explored by this year’s Official Competition. Together, these stories place the vulnerabilities, aspirations, fears and hopes of children, teenagers and young adults at their heart, offering an authentic and deeply contemporary reflection on the transformations shaping today’s younger generations. All competing films will be screened and evaluated by the Giffoni juries, who will award the prestigious Gryphon Awards. The complete list of films selected for the 2026 Official Competition is available here: https://giffoni.it/giffoni56-il-cinema-che-racconta-chi-stiamo-diventando/
GIFFONI WELLNESS
Health and prevention are among the core values of the 56th edition of the Giffoni Film Festival. Through the activities developed within its Sport programme, Giffoni continues to promote healthy lifestyles, encouraging young people to care for themselves and others while fostering awareness, respect, and well-being. Meetings, educational activities, opportunities for discussion, health screenings, and monitoring initiatives will all be part of Giffoni Wellness, a project developed over recent months with a strong focus on young people. On Friday, July 17, the initiative will officially launch within the Sport section through the opening of several Giffoni Healthy Corners—prevention hubs located near the Festival Village. These spaces will be open every day and available free of charge to jurors, families, and visitors. Throughout the Festival, a psychological support desk will be available in collaboration with the Salerno Local Health Authority (ASL Salerno 2). Visitors will also have access to cardiological screenings with Dr Roberto Viceconti, urological consultations with Dr Antonio Brando; gynaecological consultations with Dr Chiara Vicidomini and Dr Giorgia Della Polla. Gruppo Forte will also be present throughout the Festival, offering daily medical consultations delivered by healthcare professionals, together with educational workshops including: “Behind the Scenes”, focusing on child neurodevelopment and psychomotor therapy; “Movement in Action”, an innovative experience combining physical movement, technology, and body awareness. The successful partnership with AVIS (Italy’s National Blood Donors Association) also returns. Following the outstanding response achieved last year, a mobile blood donation unit will be stationed near the Cittadella del Cinema on the mornings of Saturday, July 18, and Sunday, July 19, from 7:15 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., sending a powerful message about solidarity and civic responsibility. Health-related discussions will also feature prominently within the IMPACT! programme: Wednesday, July 22: Dr Luigi Fasolino will lead a discussion on endometriosis, helping raise awareness of a condition that is still too often overlooked; Friday, July 24: “Sport in Life”, organised by Gruppo Forte, will feature Dr Maria Alfonso, Dr Valeria Agosti, and Dr Gianmarco Di Cerbo; Saturday, July 25: Dr Giulio Corrivetti, Director of the Mental Health Department of ASL Salerno 2, will present new research on internet addiction. The study will directly involve Giffoni jurors through surveys designed to analyse digital habits and psychological well-being among young people aged 18 to 35. From 17 to 25 July, every day between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., Giffoni will once again host its Quiet Room, a dedicated decompression space for neurodivergent people, organised by the Gruppo Asperger Campania APS. Located within the Giffoni Multimedia Valley Archive, the Quiet Room is the result of a cooperation agreement between Giffoni and Gruppo Asperger Campania. Furnished with soft materials and comfortable seating, the room provides children and young people experiencing sensory or emotional overload with a calm environment where they can rest and regain balance during the intense days of the Festival. It represents a tangible gesture of inclusion and sensitivity, shining a light on the important issues of neurodiversity, accessibility, and social inclusion.
SPORT
The sporting spirit of Giffoni returns as one of the Festival’s defining features. The third edition of Giffoni Sport builds on a now well-established formula, bringing together athletes, champions, and leading figures from the national and international sporting world for discussions, inspirational talks, and interactive experiences dedicated to young people and Festival audiences. From 17 to 24 July, the LETE Sport Talks will offer three major daily events, reserved for the Sport Ambassadors, a community of 100 young people under the age of 30 from across Italy. The programme focuses on sport, prevention, mental health, innovation, inclusion, and the personal and professional experiences of outstanding athletes. SPECIAL PROJECTS
#Giffoni56 will provide an opportunity to showcase the many initiatives included in the Special Projects promoted by the Giffoni Experience Autonomous Body in collaboration with government institutions, local authorities, associations, and third-sector organizations. These projects, carried out throughout the year, focus on highly relevant contemporary issues. Below are the projects featuring activities during the 2026 Giffoni Film Festival.
FAMI – ASYLUM, MIGRATION AND INTEGRATION FUND
As part of #Giffoni56, the collaboration with FAMI – the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund of the Italian Ministry of the Interior continues, with the aim of promoting an integrated management of migration flows by supporting all aspects of the phenomenon: asylum, integration, and voluntary return. The Fund is managed by the Department for Civil Liberties and Immigration of the Ministry of the Interior. Alongside promotional activities highlighting the Fund’s initiatives, the Festival will host a wide range of workshops dedicated to music, creative writing, theatre, web education, reading, as well as a special workshop designed for parents and the wider educational community. Activities will take place at the Giffoni Village and are intended for young people aged 6 to 19, while the parenting workshop is specifically designed for adults. On 21 July, FAMI representatives will hold a press conference and participate in two Festival sections: Parental Experience and Impact.
COOP FOR SCHOOLS
On 23 and 24 July, Giffoni will welcome two of the ten winning schools of the Coop for Schools 2025 project: Liceo Carducci in Ferrara and Enrico Fermi Technical Institute in San Marcello Piteglio. On 24 July, following the screening of the short films produced by the students, an awards ceremony will be held in the presence of the #Giffoni56 jurors. The Coop project, developed by Promotica S.p.A., launched the competition “Cibo e Clima – Siamo I registi del nostro futuro” (Food and Climate – We are the directors of our future), created in collaboration with Giunti Scuola and Giffoni. The initiative is part of Saperecoop, Coop’s long-standing educational programme that supports schools by promoting responsible consumption and active citizenship. The competition encouraged students to reflect, create and build together, transforming classrooms into vibrant spaces where creativity becomes a tool for personal growth, knowledge and responsibility. “Cibo e Clima” became a shared journey exploring the relationship between nutrition and climate change through a variety of creative formats, including videos, screenplays, drawings, posters and educational projects. Each contribution became part of a collective narrative that brings generations together in a shared commitment to caring for the planet.
CINEMA FOR SCHOOLS
During #Giffoni56, the results of the fifth edition of the School Experience Festival will be presented. Organized by the Giffoni Experience Autonomous Body and promoted within the framework of the National Cinema for Schools Plan, supported by the Italian Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Education and Merit, this travelling festival toured seven Italian regions—Campania, Basilicata, Calabria, Lazio, Lombardy, Puglia, and Emilia-Romagna—from November 2025 to May 2026. School Experience is much more than a film competition. With over 2,500 submissions during the pre-selection phase and 71 feature films and short films selected for competition, the project has become a comprehensive educational platform. It combines film screenings with workshops and training sessions for students (Movie Lab), teachers (Digital Prof), and families (Parental Experience), enabling participants to explore and experience the world of cinema firsthand. Following the presentation of the Festival’s results—which will include data from the 2025 edition—the organizers will also unveil the projects planned for 2026–2027.
“CON IL SUD” FOUNDATION
On 23 July, representatives of CON IL SUD FOUNDATION will attend #Giffoni56 to present the participatory campaign “SUD VIVO”, aimed at building a new public narrative around the issue of depopulation by highlighting and sharing initiatives already underway to foster the demographic, social, cultural, and economic regeneration of Southern Italy. The campaign is promoted in line with the Foundation’s 2025–2027 Strategic Plan and pursues two main objectives: to change the dominant narrative, shifting from a fatalistic and passive interpretation of depopulation to one centred on opportunity and regeneration; to encourage participatory processes by bringing together experiences, proposals, and initiatives capable of contributing, however partially yet concretely, to addressing this challenge.

The Safer Internet Centre – Connected Generations project is co-funded by the European Commission under the Digital Europe Programme. The School of Medal Art (SAM) has been training engravers of coins and medals, as well as highly skilled artistic craftspeople, for 119 years. Established in 1907 within the State Mint, the School preserves and passes down rare and traditional craftsmanship techniques. At the Giffoni Village, visitors will have the opportunity to observe live demonstrations by the School’s young artists and take part in dedicated workshops where they can create the plaster cast of a commemorative medal inspired by their Giffoni experience and the 2026 Giffoni Film Festival.
