The vulnerabilities of adolescence and growing up, the weight of judgment, and the search for one’s identity were at the heart of the discussion dedicated to Hearts on Fire, Aurélien Peyre’s film competing in the Generator +18 section of #Giffoni56. Joining the oldest jurors in the Blue Hall was actor Felix Lefebvre, the star of a story that resonates deeply and sparked an intense dialogue with the audience.
The film follows Hugo, a nineteen-year-old who, as he does every summer, returns to his family’s home on a small island in the Atlantic. This time, however, something has changed: his body is different, and so is the way he faces the world. By his side is Queen, his girlfriend, a free-spirited beautician whose eccentric style and vibrant personality stand in stark contrast to Hugo’s shyness and reserved nature. Together, they inevitably become the center of attention, forcing them both to confront the stares, prejudices, and expectations of those around them.
The screening was met with great enthusiasm by the jurors, leading to a thoughtful and engaging discussion. One of the most meaningful contributions came from Benedetta, who pointed out that “insecurities about our physical appearance and the judgment of others can deeply affect our relationships. It’s a trauma that many of us experience.”
Lefebvre echoed this reflection as he spoke about his approach to the character: “There are many complex emotions in this film. I hope my character shows that we shouldn’t judge people, but instead try to understand them beyond their small or big mistakes.”
His message of empathy and understanding strongly resonated with the young people of Giffoni, who once again took center stage in an authentic conversation about issues that are part of their everyday lives. Because behind every story, every choice, and every vulnerability, there is always a person who deserves to be heard.
