Julka
Trieste, 1924. During recess, elementary school children throw paper planes. The view from the window is dominated by the sea. Julka, Marko and Danilo, the three Slovenian pupils of the class, play and run while speaking in their mother tongue, a language prohibited by fascism. Julka doesn’t notice the Italian teacher who is entering and hears her speak Slovenian.
Valeria Cozzarini started experimenting with animation during her BA in Painting at the Academy of Fine Art of Venice. She continues to experiment with film, intersecting animation and live-action footage in personal and commissioned projects. She took part in the European Animation Masterclass in Halle (Saale) – Germany – in 2008. In 2009 she was selected for the Fondazione Bevilacqua la Masa artists’ studios in Venice. She has had valuable experiences abroad, among them a working placement at the ZKM – Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe (Germany). She was awarded First Prize at the Cortinametraggio Film Festival and in 2017 Best Art Music Video Award at the Expression Art Movie Film Festival. She directed and animated the films: MASCHERA DA VIAGGIO (2005); DUE STORIE VERE (2007), STAY OR GO, WORK (2008), VIA MOLINI 79/B (2008), DIE DREI KLEINE SCHWEINCHEN (2009), LA PIAVE: RACCONTO DI UN FIUME (2013), IO NON VOGLIO FALLIRE (2015), TOWEL DAY: A TRIBUTE TO DOUGLAS ADAMS (2017), AURALE (2019) e VIENI A VEDERE L’ARTE (2019).
