LUKHTAK
Confronted with financial hardship, a Tajik family decides to marry off their underage daughter without her consent in exchange for a “kalym” (bride price). She and her younger sister are caught in a cycle endured by generations of their family.
Samariddin Mukhitdinov is a queer Central Asian filmmaker from Tajikistan. His work centers on themes of identity and freedom, with a focus on representing minority perspectives and confronting social injustice.
He earned a BA in Cinematography from the Beijing Film Academy, supported by a Chinese government scholarship. As both a cinematographer and director, his recent projects include HOME, an undergraduate collaborative graduation project from 2024, and LUKHTAK his debut short film, which explores the story of an early arranged marriage. LUKHTAK received the Gold Prize for Best Short Feature at the 16th Cinerent Awards.
Samariddin’s work is characterized by a distinct visual style, and he is dedicated to using filmmaking to bring attention to the unspoken, overlooked, and taboo issues in conservative Tajik society.
