Rome, summer 1943. Four children play at war while the bombs of the real war explode around them. Italo is the rich son of the Federale, Cosimo has his father in confinement and an atavistic hunger, Vanda is an orphan and a believer, and Riccardo comes from a wealthy Jewish family. On October 16 he is deported by the Germans along with over a thousand people from the Ghetto. Thanks to Italo’s federal father, the three friends believe they know where he is and, to honor the “spitting pact,” they decide to leave in secret to convince the Germans to release their friend. The three children are not entirely alone; two adults want to takethem home: Agnes, a nun at the orphanage where Vanda lives, and Vittorio, Italo’s brother. She – in the name of Christianity – hates violence and he is a fascist war hero: they are different and, unlike the children, they know this very well -in fact, they argue all the time. The double journey of children and adults in a war-torn Italy brings to the screen play and terror, childlike poetry and hardship, the discovery of life and risks of death: an experience that imprints itself on everyone involved and changesthe consciousness of individuals and their relationships until the surprising – but ultimately unfortunately logical – ending. The film, based on the book of the same name by Fabio Bartolomei – is an Italian-French co-production of Solea, Bartlebyfilm, Rosebud Entertainment Pictures, in association with Medusa Film and in collaboration with Prime Video.
Produced by Sandra Bonzi, Claudio Bisio, Massimo Di Rocco, Luigi Napoleone and co-produced by Angelo Laudisa.
