SEASIDE AVENUE
Rebeca, a 12-year-old daughter of separated parents, moves with her mother to the coastal neighborhood of Piratininga. During winter, Piratininga Beach is empty and Rebeca is bored. Looking over the wall at the street, one day, she spots Mika skating down the street. The world opens up for Rebeca.
Director's Bio
Maju de Paiva is the director and screenwriter of the short films PEQUENOS ANIMAIS SEM DONO (2015) and CRAVO, LÍRIO E ROSA (2018), both of which were awarded grants from SECEC-RJ and screened and awarded at festivals such as FICUNAM, FESTin, Kinoforum, Festival de Tiradentes, Curta Cinema, and Mostra Sesc de Cinema. In 2017, PEQUENOS ANIMAIS was featured in the program Curta na Tela and Pausa pro Café on Canal Brasil.
Her feature project, AVENIDA BEIRA-MAR, won the Best Screenplay for a Feature Film category at FRAPA, took second place at the Cabíria Awards, and was selected for the Lab. Novas Histórias 2018.
In 2020, she received the Elas Cabíria Telecine Seal award, making it a co-production with Elo Company and sold to Telecine. In 2021, the project was selected for the Produire au Sud workshop in France, and Telecine also came on board as a co-producer. Her second screenplay for the feature film DIÁRIO DO FOGO, co-written with Bernardo Florim and also a Telecine co-production, was selected for the RioFilme 2021 grant.
Bernardo Florim, a graduate in Cinema from UFF and a Master in Creative Media from ECO – UFRJ, is the screenwriter for the feature films MISSÃO 115 (É Tudo Verdade Festival), NELSON PEREIRA DOS SANTOS: UMA VIDA DE CINEMA (selected for the 2023 Cannes Film Festival), ZÉ KÉTI: EU SOU O SAMBA (CineBrasil TV), EUCLYDES PINTO MARTINS (CineBrasil TV), TRÁGICAS (Tiradentes Film Festival), and the series ONDE A BELEZA ESTÁ (Curta! Channel). His fiction projects have received national and international awards.
AVENIDA BEIRA-MAR was awarded Best Screenplay at FRAPA, received the Elas Cabíria Seal and the Cabíria Telecine Prize, and was selected for the Lab. Novas Histórias SESC/SENAC and Produire au Sud, a prestigious workshop at the Festival des 3 Continents (Nantes). The project is a co-production with Telecine, Elo Company, and Viralata Produções.
ANIMAIS DA NOITE was selected for Brasil Cinemundi and is distributed by O2 Filmes. DIÁRIO DO FOGO was sponsored by Riofilme and is also a Telecine co-production.

“Childhood is a time of learning, a period of life in which we shape our personalities and our worldview. Racism, homophobia and transphobia are concepts not yet crystallized in children’s imagination. SEASIDE AVENUE originated from the desire to re-signify the coming of age, a genre that, until not so long ago, only embraced stories about cisgender characters played by cisgender actors. The contemporary world is not so binary anymore. Cinema has become a useful tool for raising awareness towards gender diversity.
In Brazil, the life expectancy of a transgender person is 35 years old. We face the highest rates for murder motivated by transphobia. The trans agenda is urgent worldwide and one of the concerns is how to present it to society. SEASIDE AVENUE chose an unusual angle: a child’s point of view.”
