This afternoon, the young jurors of the Elements+10 section watched the film THERE AND BACK, directed by Russian filmmaker Oleg Assadulin. The story challenges the relationship between young people and illness, along with the possibility of death. The protagonist is Mitya, a young boy who, accompanied by his father, visits an oncology specialized hospital. The parent’s suspicions led them to bring the child for routine examinations to ward off any risks.

During one of the exams, some doctors decide to keep the boy hospitalized for a few extra days to further investigate his health. While Mitya is admitted to the hospital, he meets Marina who, for the first time, tells him about Capo Storto. A somewhat strange name for a place considered magical, where one can express any type of desire.

The director, who graduated in filmmaking from the German Academy of Film and Television in Berlin, wanted to create a film that addresses a topic that always frightens adults: illness and death. According to the director’s directorial notes, this desire arose when he became a father and started living with the constant thought of making his child’s life as peaceful as possible. Of course, this concern extends not only to his own child but to all the children on Earth. The fear that something bigger and particularly difficult to handle might happen to such innocent and defenceless souls, worries him deeply.

Discussing it in a film was a way to analyse it, a kind of therapy to overcome this fear.

Addressing such a young audience and talking about illness and death is crucial because these two moments are also part of life. There is no point in hiding from them; instead, these topics should be confronted, so that young minds can already form their own thoughts about them, even if they are far away from having to deal with them.
