Weightless
Fifteen-year-old Lea is spending her summer at a health camp tucked between the forest and the sea. Her new roommate, Sasha, is everything Lea wishes she could be: bold, magnetic, and unafraid to take up space in the world. While Sasha flirts with the local boys, Lea’s gaze is fixed on Rune, the camp’s charming instructor. When Rune reciprocates her attention, something awakens within Lea; an unfamiliar yet thrilling desire.
Emilie Thalund was born in 1989. She is a Danish director whose debut feature, WEIGHTLESS, had its world premiere at the San Sebastián International Film Festival 2025. A film born from a personal place and emotional insight, it continues the intimate perspective that characterizes her work. She gained international recognition with her 2018 short, PERIOD, which won gold at Cannes Lions YDA for its fearless take on a global taboo. With a master’s in Art and Architecture from the Royal Danish Academy, her transition from fine arts to film informs her poetic visual style and emotional sensibility.
Director’s Note
With WEIGHTLESS, I wanted to portray a young girl’s sexual and emotional awakening with both empathy and seriousness. The film explores the balance between the longing for love and recognition, and the power structures that arise when this longing encounters adult sexuality. At the center is the body—a body that does not fit society’s ideals, yet carries desire, dreams, and strength. The film seeks to give a voice to a type of girl we rarely see in cinema, and to take her longing seriously – aiming to authentically reflect the conditions she navigates the world under. WEIGHTLESS is a film about boundaries, body, vulnerability and the strength of friendship.
